Top 8 Winter Destinations

Some travellers are enchanted by a white winter wonderland, while others are itching to escape the frosty weather. Wether you’re on either ends of this scale or somewhere in between, here are our top 8 winter destinations to get your winter travel itch sorted!

1. Christmas Markets in Germany and Austria

Christmas Markets are experiences that embody the spirit of the season. These romantic historic markets pop up all over Germany and Austria. Expect cute stalls selling everything from gingerbread to sleigh bells and plenty of good cheer.

2. Budapest Hungary

Couples skating hand-in-hand, breath cloudy in the frosty air there’s nowhere better for it than the Hungarian capital’s picturesque central park Városligeti Műjégpálya, with its enormous outdoor rink. Feeling chilly afterwards? Budapest is famous for its ornate thermal baths.

3. Innsbruck, Austria

It’s time to make our way to the fairy-tale town of Innsbruck. Nestled within folds of the high Alpine mountains, Innsbruck calls out to visitors with its enchanting sea of Habsburg palaces and alluring Tyrolean taverns. Culture and cuisine aside, Innsbruck offers a formidable wealth of ski resorts, so if you want to warm up after gliding down slopes with a nice, warm bowl of Tiroler Speckknödel, this is the place to be.

4. Athens, Greece

Athens is a history and culture buff’s haven. With the sheer amount of artifacts, ruins, and stories concentrated in one place, Athens attracts huge amounts of visitors, so expect to get 500 other people in your shot of your favourite place. Unlike the summer stresses of crowding, tourist pricing, intense heat, and queues, winter months attract fewer crowds making it the best time to explore the country’s ancient heritage and experience local culture.

5. Venice

Hauntingly beautiful and rather weird, Venice’s Carnevale in February is a European highlight. Elaborate costumes and ornate masks bring the canal city’s colourful history to life. Costumed dances are pricey affairs, but you can have a ball enjoying the free events with a mask bought on the street.

6. Amalfi Coast, Italy

Perched over the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Amalfi Coast is a great winter getaway. Maybe lounging by the poolside in your swimwear in the dead of winter isn’t on top of your list, but temperatures here rarely drop below 10 degrees celsius. For a dose of history, visit nearby Pompeii, and take the hydrofoil to Capri to see the sunlight stream into the fabled Blue Grotto.

7. Maldives

There is no bad time to go to the Maldives. They are perfect little islands, whichever you choose tiny castaway-fantasy sandy islets, mostly with one immaculate resort, with various levels of splendidness. December-April is the dry season where the islands see little rain and lower humidity. This is also the best time for divers as visibility during these months is superb.

8. Morocco

On the edge of the Sahara desert, Marrakech and Agadir remain warm throughout the winter. Chill on the beach against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains or, if that’s not relaxing enough, really treat yourself with a visit to a steamy spa-like hammam for some blissful pampering.
