Your 4-Day Guide to Beautiful Istanbul

So you’ve seen the stunning photos of the Hagia Sophia, and the atmospheric Basilica Cistern has piqued your interest, but you just need that final nudge to put Istanbul on top of your travel list. Well look no further, because our 4-day guide to the electrifyingly beautiful city will have you booking your next flight to this magical place where the East meets West.

Day 1

So you’ve arrived bright-eyed and eager; why waste any time on your first day? Head right to the Old City of Sultanahmet and discover the treasures of Constantinople. Hit the major sights like the Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque which are set just across from each other.
A few steps away from the Hagia Sofia is the Basilica Cistern (straight from a scene out of James Bond’s From Russia With Love).
Don’t forget you’re in a city that runs on delicious hot cups of coffee, so in between sights, take the time for some Turkish coffee, tea, and plenty of Turkish delight along the way.
After energising yourself with a couple of bites of baklava, head to the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world! If you’ve managed to find your way out of the chaotic yet charming rabbit hole of fabrics, carpets and trinkets, cross over the Galata Bridge and brace yourself for one of the most romantic views in the world.

Day 2

Pick up where you left off and head to the top of the Galata Tower while it’s early and less crowded. One of Istanbul’s most iconic visuals that looks over  Beyoğlu and Karaköy, the Galata Tower offers phenomenal views of the city.
From there, wander up to Istiklal Avenue where you will get a sense of the energy of the city. On top of Istiklal is Taksim Square, the Times Square” of Istanbul—it’s electrifying and it pulls you right in. This is where you can catch the iconic Funicular train back down to the waterfront.
After immersing yourself in so much stimulating sights, sounds, and energy, now would be the perfect time to indulge yourself in a Turkish Bath at one of the recently refurbished Hamams. This is where the day’s baggage gets scrubbed away as you end the ancient Ottoman sultan’s bathing ritual with a massage and a few more bites of Turkish delight.

Day 3

Istanbul is also a food lover’s paradise and for them, we recommend starting the day with a Turkish breakfast. The Turkish breakfast is an institution and is most popular with locals on Sundays by the Bosphorous
Savour selections of cheese, Simit, Borek pastry and spreads—all washed down with a rich cup of Turkish coffee.
Now, you’ve been flirting with the shores of Bosphorous for the past two days it’s time to get out there. Hop onto a Bosphorous cruise and explore some of the neighbourhoods and sights up the busy strait.
Have a traditional fish lunch by the water at Anadolu Kavağı, a classic pitstop among tourists and locals alike. On your way back, hop off at Beşiktaş to swing through Dolmabahçe Palace, the Ottoman sultans’ over-the-top version of Versailles, built just as the Empire was crumbling.

Day 4

Take a step back in time and take a spin through Istanbul’s famous markets, starting with the quaint neighbourhood of Kadiköy, known for its food bazaar where the neighbourhood’s take on Turkish homemade cuisine is celebrated.
To cap the trip off, take a ferry back Eminönü to explore the Spice Bazaar (known as the Egyptian Market here). If you’re feeling inspired, wend your way to the Rüstem Paşa Mosque, built by Sinan practically on top of the market.
